. 30 December 1997
AGE-NC Project No 97-0343
3.0. PROCEDURES
3 1 PROBING AND SAMPLING
On 18 September 1997, five soil probe borings (probings) were advanced at the site using AGE's
Geopiobe 5400 probing unit equipped with 1 25-inch diameter probe rods and a 2 15-inch diameter
soil sampling assembly Probing B1 was advanced in the apparent former UST excavation, as
indicated by cut patterns on the pavement, probings B2 and B5 were advanced south and north of
the apparent former UST excavation, respectively, and probings B3 and B4 were advanced east of
the apparent former UST excavation Probing B I was advanced to 65 feet bsg, and probe borings
B2, B4 and B5 were advanced to 30 feet bsg, and probing B3 was advanced to 35 feet bsg Probe
boi ing locations are shown on Figure 2
Soil samples were collected at 5-foot intervals, beginning at 5 feet bsg, to the total depth of each
probing, excluding probing B1 at 65 feet bsg All samples were collected using the Geoprobe soil
sampling assembly loaded with four 1 125-inch by 6-inch brass sleeves After collection, the ends
of the second brass sleeve were covered with aluminum sheets, capped and sealed with tape The
sleeves were labeled, placed in a chilled container and selected samples were transported under
chain-of-custody to McCampbell Analytical Inc (MAI), a state-certified analytical laboratory, in
Pacheco, California
After encountering refusal in probing B1 at 65 feet bsg, an attempt was made to obtain a grab water
sample, however, water could not be retrieved The remaining probe borings did not achieve
sufficient depth to attempt collection of a grab water sample
All probing rods, sampling tools and sample liners used for sample collection were thoioughly rinsed
` with clean water after washing with a solution of Alconox between each sampling run All probings
were backfilled over their entire depth with portland cement, using a treinmie pipe
32 LOGGING
Soil was extruded from the remaining brass sleeves and screened for the presence of organic vapor
using an organic vapor meter equipped with ,a photo-ionization detector (PID Thermo
Environmental 580A, 10 OeV, calibrated to isobutylene), the ieadmgs were recorded on the boring
logs Soil was described in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System(see Boring Logs,
Appendix A)
•
Afi=alrcedGeoE.nviranmental,Inc
