a
9
MENNOW
S
3.2 SOIL SAMPLING
w
The first hole drilled on site will be continuously cored in
order to obtain a complete and detailed geologic description.
All subsurface materials will be described using the visual
method of the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) as
described in United States Bureau of Reclamation Document No.
5005-86. Each subsequent well will be sampled at five foot
intervals. Samples will be collected utilizing a split spoon
sampler advanced using a 140 lb. hammer. The sampler will house
brass tubes for collect;on of undisturbed samples. The sampler
and brass tubes will be decontaminated by scrubbing with a non-
phosphate detergent, several water rinses, methanol rinse and a
distilled water rinse. (Brass tubes pre-cleaned by supplier may
be used.) Samples for laboratory analysis will, be collected at
the following locations in each well bore (if applicable) :
unsaturated and saturated zones
1. Interface between the
2. Areas of obvious contamination, specifically the sample
with the highest hydrocarbon headspace measurement.
(The number of aampies collected per this condition
will be at the discretion of the field geologist. )
3. Areas of significant lithologic changes
4. Areas of any other unusual conditions
Each soil sample retained for analysis will be described, checked
for the presence of hydrocarbons, and promptly sealed with
aluminum foil and plastic end caps. The samples will then be
placed in a "zip-loc" bag and sealed with 5acurity tape. The
samples will be stored in an refrigerated ice chest until
delivery to the laboratory.
All soil samples will be analyzed by IT Analytical services
laboratory in San Jose, California. The samples will be analyzed
utilizing the following methods and detection limits.
3--3
