1
• The drill rig shall be driven or moved only after the mast has been lowered; and
• The levelling jacks shall not be raised until the derrick is lowered.
When drilling is to be conducted in contaminated soil, appropriate monitoring shall be
conducted to assess worker exposure as well as effectiveness of control measures. Monitoring
to be conducted will be specified in the Project HASP. Additional PPE may be required
during these conditions.
Hoisting Operations
The following procedures shall be followed during hoisting operations:
• Drillers should never engage the rotary clutch without watching the rotary table,
and ensuring it is clear of personnel and equipment;
• Unless the drawworks is equipped with an automatic feed control, the brake
should not be left unattended, without first being tied down;
• Drill pipe or casing should not be picked up suddenly;
• Drill pipe should not be hoisted until the driller is sure that the pipe is latched in
the elevator, or the derrickman has signalled that he may safely hoist the pipe;
• During instances of unusual loading of the derrick or mast, such as when making
an unusually hard pull, only the driller should be on the rig floor, and no one
should be on the rig or derrick;
The brakes on the drawworks of every drilling rig should be tested by each
driller, when he comes on shift to determine whether they are in good order.
The brakes should be thoroughly inspected by a competent individual each week;
• A hoisting lure with a load unposed should not be permitted to be in direct
contact with any derrick member or stationary equipment, unless it has been
specifically designed for line contact;
• Workers should never stand near the boring whenever any wire line device is
being run; and
• Hoisting control stations should be kept clean and controls labelled as to their
functions.
• Under no circumstances will personnel be permitted to ride the travelling block
or elevators, nor will the catline be used as a personnel carrier.
Catiine Operations
The following procedures shall be followed during catline operations:
• Only experienced workers will be allowed to operate the cathead controls. The
kill switch must be clearly labelled and operational prior to operation of the
' catline;
• The cathead area must be kept free of obstructions and entanglements;
Mzros-09-94/vsT/94-0064 4-5
