a
only one soil sample and one groundwater sample from each Geoprobe
location at each site will be collected and submitted for laboratory
analysis. Soil samples will be collected from the unsaturated zone at an
approximate depth of two to four feet. Groundwater samples will be
collected at the soil/groundwater interface.
Table 1
Proposed Geoprobe Sampling Scheme
Site Proposed Proposed Proposed Approximate
Number of Number of Number of Soil Sampling
Geoprobe Soil Samples GW Depths (ft)*
Locations Collected Samples
Collected
UST 517 15 12 15 2 to 4
UST 816D 12 10 12 2 to 4
Sump 617 8 6 8 2 to 4
Sum 816D 1 6 4 1 6 2 to 4
Note: If additional Geoprobe sampling is necessary to define the extent of
contamination at a site, approval from the EFAWEST Engineer-in-Charge will be
requested.
*=Depending on field conditions, soil samples will be collected in the deepest portion
of the vadose zone (capillary fringe) , with no more than five vertical feet
separating the samples in one bore hole. In the event that the water table is less than
approximately three feet below ground surface, no soil samples will be collected.
It is anticipated that soil contamination will be somewhat limited since
the primary movement of liquids in the unsaturated zone is
downward. Defining groundwater contamination may require
considerably more Geoprobe sampling due to the lateral movement of
groundwater. In the case where soil contamination has been defined
based on field screening but additional Geoprobe sampling is necessary
only to define groundwater contamination, soil samples from the
additional Geoprobe locations will not be submitted for laboratory
analysis.
Geoprobe Sampling
A Geoprobe sampler will collect soil and groundwater samples for
evaluation of subsurface conditions and laboratory analysis. The
Geoprobe is a truck- or van-mounted system that collects soil and
groundwater samples using a hydraulic press and hydraulic hammer to
drive one- or two-inch-outer-diameter sample collection devices to the
desired depths. Only one sample can be collected each time the sample
4-3
