collection device is driven. If more than one sample or type of sample
is required, several different sample collection devices can be
sequentially driven down the same hole.
A geologist will prepare a lithologic log of each Geoprobe location
using the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS). All Geoprobe
holes will be backfilled with neat cement.
Geoprobe Soil Sampling Methodolosv
Soil core sampling is conducted using 5-foot sections of
decontaminated 3/4-inch I.D. galvanized steel probe pipe. The probe
pipe is connected to a 1-foot galvanized steel soil core tube. Solid
_ stainless steel decontaminated insert rods are placed through the probe
pipe and sampling core. The probe pipe, soil core, and insert rods are
pneumatically driven to the depth the soil sample is desired. The
insert rods are removed and the probe pipe and core tube is driven 1-
foot to obtain the soil core sample. The probe pipe containing soil
sample is removed from the hole and the soil sample is disconnected
from the probe pipe. The core can be cut into smaller cores for
lithologic evaluation, field screening, and chemical analyses. The ends
of the core for analyses are sealed using teflon tape and plastic end caps.
The sample is labeled with project name, date, time of sample,
designated sample location, and other pertinent information. The
sample is placed in an air tight bag and stored in an iced cooler or
presented to the mobile analytical laboratory.
Geoprobe Groundwater Sampling_Methodology
Groundwater sampling is conducted using a 6-foot long section of
decontaminated 3/4-inch I.D. perforated or slotted galvanized steel
probe pipe (hydroprobe). The hydroprobe is connected to 5-foot
sections of probe pipe, as required. Decontaminated insert rods are
placed through the probe pipe and pneumatically driven into the
aquifer or saturated zone. Several development techniques may be
used to encourage flow into the perforated probe, if necessary.
Groundwater samples are collected using decontaminated stainless
steel bailers and placed into containers provided by the analytical
laboratory. The containers are labeled with the project name, date,
time of sample, designated sample location, and other pertinent
information. The containers are placed in an iced cooler or presented
to the mobile analytical laboratory.
4-4
