predominate. Therefore, although the hazards of the identified
hydrocarbons are summarized separately below, additive effects of the
mixture will be taken into consideration when determining established
action levels.
Acetone. Acetone is a skin irritant and a severe eye irritant. Inhalation
of acetone has been reported to cause nasal effects, eye irritation,
respiratory system effects, nausea and vomiting, and muscle weakness.
However, in industry, no injurious effects have been reported other
than skin irritation resulting from acetone's defatting action. The
current Cal/OSHA PEL for acetone is listed as 750 ppm.
4-Methyl-2-Pentanone (Methyl Isobutyl Ketone rMIBKI). MIBK is
moderately toxic by ingestion and mildly toxic by inhalation. It is very
irritating to the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes, and is a narcotic in
high concentrations. MIBK is a fire and explosion hazard when
exposed to heat, flame, or oxidizers. The current Cal/OSHA PEL for
MIBK is listed as 50 ppm.
Tetrachloroethylene (PCE). PCE is a clear, non-flammable VOC with an
etheral odor. Its major uses include commercial dry cleaning and
metal degreasing. Exposure to PCE can result in effects on the central
nervous system, mucous membranes, eyes, lungs, liver, kidney, heart,
and skin. The most frequent effects include unconsciousness,
dizziness, headache, and light-headedness. Skin contact may create a
dry, scaly, itchy dermatitis. Recent studies suggest that PCE can cause
liver cancer in rats and mice. The current Cal/OSHA PEL for PCE is
listed as 25 ppm.
Semivolatile Organic Compounds (SVOCs)
Most SVOCs, except those known to be carcinogenic, exhibit similar
hazard effects in humans. Skin irritation and effects on the liver,
kidneys, central nervous system, and upper respiratory system
predominate.
Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)
PCBs are a series of technical mixtures consisting of many isomers and
compounds that vary from mobile oil liquids to white crystalline solids
and hard non-crystalline resins. Technical products vary in
composition, in the degree of chlorination, and. possibly. according to
batch. Generally, PCBs are moderately toxic by ingestion; some are
poisons by other routes. Most are suspected human carcinogens and
experimental tumorigens and exhibit experimental reproductive
6-7
