effects. PCBs have two distinct actions on the body: a skin effect and a <br /> toxic action on the liver. The higher their chlorine content, the more <br /> toxic PCBs tend to be. <br /> Metals <br /> Several metals are often found in waste oils; these metals include lead, <br /> copper, cadmium, chromium, and nickel. Overexposure to these <br /> metals can affect the respiratory system, central nervous system, <br /> kidneys, skin, and liver. <br /> Physical Hazards <br /> Physical hazards associated with site activities include slips, trips, falls, <br /> contact- and crushing-type injuries, abrasions, contusions, lacerations, <br /> flammability, and heat stress concerns. The potential for such hazards <br /> necessitates the use of gloves, safety shoes or boots, and hard hats. <br /> Additionally, personnel engaged in strenuous physical labor are to <br /> wear sturdy work gloves. <br /> Use of Equil2ment <br /> Any equipment, including drill rigs, earth moving equipment, cranes, <br /> or other heavy machinery, will be operated in strict compliance with <br /> the manufacturer's instructions, specifications, and limitations, as well <br /> as any applicable regulations. The operator is responsible for inspecting <br /> the equipment daily to ensure that it is functioning properly and safely. <br /> This inspection will include all pins, pulleys, and connections subject <br /> to faster than normal wear, and all lubrication points. <br /> When equipment with moving booms, arms, or masts is operated in <br /> the vicinity of overhead hazards, the operator, with assistance from the <br /> designated signaling person, will ensure that the moving parts of the <br /> equipment maintain safe clearances to the hazards. Equipment will be <br /> kept at least 20 feet away from energized electrical lines. Drill rigs and <br /> other equipment not specifically designed to move with an elevated <br /> boom, mast, or arm will be returned to traveling position and <br /> condition before being moved. <br /> All portable equipment and tools will be inspected prior to each day's <br /> use and as often as necessary to ensure that they are safe to use. <br /> Defective equipment and tools will be removed from service <br /> immediately. Examples of defective tools include: hooks and chains <br /> 6-8 <br />
