-4-
The selection of personal protective. equipment is based on these general
guidelines , knowledge of the nature and levels of contaminants , and the
nature of the task and setting of the worksite. Additional information
regarding the PPE program including protective equipment/respirator
selection is included in the attached ERM-West' s SOPs. Action levels
required to upgrade respirator selection are given in the previous section
(EXPOSURE MONITORING PLAN) .
The Contractor does not anticipate that respirators will be required for
this project. However, if during air monitoring, readings indicate that
respirators are required , work will be halted and workers will leave the
area. The workers will re-enter the area only after proper respiratory
equipment is donned.
ERM-blest personnel will use coated tyvek suits and nitrile gloves for
future sampling activities that may involve contact with PCB containing
oils.
3. WORK ZONE MAPS
Work zone maps were not included in the Health and Safety Plan in part due
to the lack of adequate drawings and plans of the base facilities in the
early stages of the preparation of the project documents. Although maps
are easier to interpret, Table 5-1 in the Health and Safety Plan has been
presented in lieu of work zone maps. It is felt that based on the
Contractor's scope of work for this project, Table 5 is sufficiently
clear, easy to follow, and contains adequate information.
However, for future projects , when appropriate, the Navy will include site
and area maps with exclusion, contamination reduction, decontamination
area, and support zones outlined.
4. STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES FOR:
a. Respirator fit testing
Respirator fit testing is included as part of the 40 hour hazardous
waste training course required by federal OSHA regulations found in
29CFR1910.120. This course is required for all ERM-West field
personnel . In addition, the ER11-!-lest distributors of respiratory
protection equipment have facilities for giving fit tests. ERM-!Jest
field personnel have the option of buying the respirator for which
they were fit tested in the hazardous :paste training course or being
fit tested by their safety equipment supplier when buying some other
respirator of their choice.
