Description of Facility and Waste Streams
The following information was provided by Mr. Art Corona.
General Services Administration (GSA) is the warehousing and distribution
facility for the Western United States. The facility is located on Rough
and Ready Island in Stockton. The current inventory is estimated to be
at seven million dollars, and includes such items as soaps and detergents,
paints, solvents, adhesives, waxes, and paper goods. These are sold and
distributed to various government agencies. Waste streams include solvents,
oils, sludges, and batteries from equipment maintenance, spillage, retro-
grade materials, and carrier damaged materials. All wastes are currently
stored, unprotected, in a fenced enclosure. Previously they were stored
similarly at another nearby location. That area, taken out of service
because of soil contamination, is currently under investigation. A new
storage facility is to be built by the Navy (Rough and Ready Island host)
in the near future. Oils and solvents are sold to recyclers/waste haulers.
