The upper unit is predominantly sandy and extends
from the ground surface to a depth of 4 feet. Beneath this unit the
sails are silty clays with low permeability that extend to an
undetermined depth. Within the boundaries of the former
excavation, the fill material replaced the sandy unit and extends
from the surface to the bottom of the excavation. The depth of this fill
material is shown in Figure 1-3.
Ground surface elevation at the site is approximately 18 feet above
mean sea level (MSL). Information supplied by the City of Stockton
- Public Works Division reported the elevation of the first unconfined
groundwater in the Spring of 1989 at 18 feet below MSI:. Thus, the
static groundwater level may be between 35 and 40 feet below the
- ground.surface. Groundwater levels were 7 feet higher during the
Spring of 1984. Groundwater gradients measured during the Spring
of 1984 and 1989 showed the groundwater flowing in a southwesterly
direction.
Surface water in the area is Iimited to Mormon Slough which flows
only intermittently. Mormon Slough runs from east to west
approximately 7,14 mile to the south of the site and empties into the
east end of the Stockton Deep Water Channel about 1 mile northwest
of the site.
SOIL DTV1ESTIGArflON
A soil investigation was performed by ERM-West to obtain a
preliminary assessment of the vertical and horizontal extent of any
contamination that may have remained in the soil following removal
of the tanks. The investigation involved 10 soil borings below and
adjacent to the backfill material (Figure 1-4).
Since the proposed work involved disturbance of the subsoil,
Underground Services Alert was asked to notify local utilities of our
- intentions to do work at the site. The following utility companies
inspected the site:
• MCI
• City of Stockton
1-6
