The San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department (EHD) received a response by letter
dated August 29, 2008, from ATC Associates, Incorporated, (ATC) to the EHD correspondence by
letter dated August 22, 2008, concerning Additional Subsurface Investigation Work Plan, Former
Thiemann's Service Station, 106 West Second Street, Ripon, California, dated July 16, 2008.
In the letter, ATC concurs with the EHD opinion that the vertical extent of contamination in soil
has been adequately defined, and clarifies that ATC has no intentions to submit soil samples for
chemical analysis during the site investigation. ATC proposes to electronically characterize
subsurface lithology and permeability units using cone penetration test (CPT) technology. Based
on this information, ATC will determine the number of groundwater samples to collect from
discreet borings advanced adjacent to the three proposed CPT borings.
ATC concurs with the recommendation by the EHD to advance the first of three CPT borings in the
source area to a depth of approximately 100 to 150 feet below surface grade (bsg). Depths for the
remaining two CPT borings will be based on data generated from the initial CPT boring, provided a
correlation exists between soil types and permeable intervals.
The EHD approves the work plan with the revisions noted above. Please summit an encroachment
permit from the City of Ripon, a boring permit application and permit/inspection fee of$404 per
parcel, and complete the fieldwork by November 10, 2008. If you have any questions concerning
this letter, contact Vicki McCartney, Senior Registered Environmental Health Specialist at (209)
