i
M
M
complete the site assessment work. A workplan was submitted to PHSEHD during June, 1999.
Upgradient reportedly conducted a sensitive receptor survey in the vicinity of the site in
June,1999 the results of which were reportedly included in the workplan submitted to PHSEHD.
The results of that survey reportedly identified ten private wells within a 2,000-foot radius of the
site, the nearest one being owned by the ST&E. This well is.located at the west(front)end of the
locomotive service building, approximately 300 feet west of the underground tank site.
a
2.2 Previous Subsurface Investigations
i
V&W Drilling mobilized a truck-mounted hollow-stem auger drilling rig to the site on August
24, 1999 and drilled four soil borings under the supervision of Upgradient. The first boring(B 1
in Figure 6)was drilled near the southwestern corner of the former UST excavation, and was
sampled at 5-foot intervals starting at a'depth of 15 feet(close to the base of the former UST
excavation). Soil sampling was conducted using a split-spoon sample barrel loaded with clean
brass sample tubes. Upgradient reported moist soil at a depth of 40 feet bgs, suggesting that the a
capillary fringe had been reached. However,no groundwater reportedly entered the soil boring
and the soil boring was terminated at this depth. l
I
After steam-cleaning the augers,V&W drilled four more borings(Figure 6.). Soil samples were
collected at 5-foot intervals, beginning at either 5 or 10 feet. These borings were terminated at
30 feet bgs and were plugged with cement-bentonite grout. The soil boring cutting were placed
on plastic sheeting east of the investigation area and covered, pending laboratory analysis of the
soil samples. After all borings were drilled, they were backfilled with cement-bentonite grout.
A geologist from Upgradient examined the samples and prepared boring logs. These logs are
presented in Appendix 2. The number of percussion hammer blows needed to drive the sampler
18 inches into the native soil was recorded on the boring log, along with a description of the
sample. One tube from each sample was capped, scaled, Iabeled,.and placed in a cooled ice chest
prior to shipment to McCampbell Analytical,Pacheco,California.
M ain\D\Eoviroamontal\\STE%W otkplan\W orkplanl l 142007.wpd f
r +
