Subsurface Investigative Results
The site is underlain at shallow depths by beds of silt and fine-grained sand that vary in thickness
and extent(Figure 7). The uppermost unit is a silt bed whose color and thickness are variable. $
This bed is missing in the former UST pit where it was likely removed during the over
excavation. . East of the excavation, the silt bed overlies a relatively thin sand bed that is fine
grained to silty.Below the sand is a thick layer of relatively consolidated silt that contains leaf
impressions;root holes, and other evidence of ongoing soil profile formation. Below the silt bed
is another sand bed that coarsens downward but its base was not reached during the subsurface
investigation. The lithologic contact between the silt bed and this lower sand bed varies from a
depth of 24 feet bgs in soil boring B 1 to approximately 28 feet bgs in soil borings B2 and B5.
This lithologic contact was reportedly not encountered in soil boring B4.
Strong to moderate petroleum hydrocarbon odors were detected in the upper silt bed in soil {
boring Bl. A slight odor was noted in the uppermost sand sample(25 feet bgs)from this same
boring. No evidence of petroleum hydrocarbon contamination was noted in any of the other soil
samples or in the auger cuttings.
Soil boring B3 was located within a few feet of the first locomotive fueling track, in a slight
depression between the first locomotive fueling track and the location of the former UST pit. I
i
This boring reported encountered water at a depth of less than 2 feet bgs that had a substantial
petroleum hydrocarbon sheen observed on the water. Drilling operations were suspended '
because of concern that a subsurface water line had been breached. Personnel from ST&E
inspected the location and informed Upgradient and V&W that railroad locomotives were
washed and flushed on the engine tracks adjacent to this boring, and that the wash water collects
in this depression in the boring. Upgradient directed V&W to move 10 feet to the west of soil i
boring B3 and drill a new boring(B4). After 134 was drilled, a water sample was collected from
B3, although most of the water had drained from the borehole while B4 was being drilled.
p
M&WD%ovironmenlaMSTEM orkplaolWorkplen]1142007—pd 8
