Mr. Michael J. Infurna, Jr.
September 27, 2001 `
Page 2
section extending from approximately 5 to 40 feet bgs (top of the water table). One two-inch
diameter IAS test well will be installed with a 5-foot screen section set approximately 5 to 7
feet below the water table. Soil samples will be collected from each well boring for BTEX and
TPH analyses to assess the current soil conditions in the source area.
• SVE and IAS Pilot Testing - An 8-hour SVE pilot test and a 72-hour IAS pilot test will be
performed. The SVE pilot test will utilize an internal combustion engine-based extraction unit.
The IAS pilot test will utilize a regenerative blower or compressor. Characteristics that will
be evaluated from the pilot testing data include vadose zone gas permeability, groundwater
flow rate, radial influence of the sparging well, aquifer permeability and heterogeneity, and
contaminant volatility and solubility.
• Constant-Rate Aquifer Pumping Test — A 24-hour constant-rate aquifer pump test will be
performed in a monitor well located in or near the tank pit area. The constant-rate aquifer
pump test will utilize a 2- or 4-inch submersible pump for groundwater extraction and data will
be logged constantly in at least four observation points using Solinst Level Loggers. Note:
The aquifer testing may not be conducted if the SVE and IAS Pilot Test data indicate that
those technologies are suitable for site remediation.
• Treatibility Analyses -- Soil samples for treatibility analyses will be collected from two soil
borings. One soil boring will be installed near the former tank pit (SVE well boring, MW-
13/13A) and the other soil boring will be installed in a location outside of the plume (near
MW-6). The proposed boring locations are depicted on the attached figure. Two samples will
be collected from each boring. Physicochemical and microbiological analyses will be
conducted on each sample to characterize the organic content, pH, permeability, moisture
content, nutrient level, and redox potential. Bench studies will be run on two samples to test
for the effects of oxygen and nutrients on the stimulation of selective microbes. These tests
take place over a 21-day period and involve adding various levels of nutrients or oxygen to
the samples. Microbial growth is then tested at 4, 7, 11, 16, and 21 days.
• Sensitive Receptor Survey—A sensitive receptor survey will be conducted to identify exposure
pathways and potential human and ecological receptors.
• Corrective Action Plan (,CAP,) - Following evaluation of the pilot testing, aquifer test,
treatibility data, and completion of the sensitive receptor survey, AES will submit a CAP to
the San Joaquin PHS-EHD. The CAP will include results of field and laboratory pilot tests,
recommendations for the most cost effective remediation alternative(s), remedial activity
details, implementation and scheduling detail, an estimate of the duration of the clean up time,
the finalized costs for system implementation, and annual operation and maintenance costs.
