. IV. HYDROCARBON MASS AND TREATMENT CALCULATIONS
A. CLEANUP GOALS
Based on the sensitive receptor survey conducted in April 2002, the Former Canteen Facility lies
within an area of current beneficial use Cleanup levels for the impacted soil will follow the EPA
Region 9 Preliminary Remediation Goals (PRGs) Cleanup levels for groundwater will follow the
California Department of Health Services Drinking Water Standard Maximum Contaminant Levels
(CAMCLs)
The following cleanup target goals have been set for the site
1 Remediate dissolved-phase contamination to below the drinking water MCLs that have been
established by the CA DoH
2 Remove/recover sorbed-phase contamination to below health-based levels (designated PRGs
for the purposes of this document
3 Remediate source area sorbed-phase hydrocarbons as a continuing source of groundwater
hydrocarbon concentrations (groundwater protective pathway)
4 Provide efficient capture of dissolved-phase hydrocarbons which may be volatilized by
. remedial actions
After reaching the various target goals, confirmation soil borings will be advanced to determine
residual soil concentrations If soils are below these concentrations, then closure will be pursued
Groundwater monitoring at the site will continue for a period specified by the San Joaquin County
Public Health Services, Environmental Health Division
B. ESTIMATED HYDROCARBON MASS
In order to determine estimated duration of remedial operations for the hydrocarbon concentrations
at the site, we must determine the areal extent of the impact(s), the apparent thickness of the
impact(s), and the distribution of the various phases of the hydrocarbon constituents The
hydrocarbons are present in four(4) distinct phases at the site
1 Sorbed-Phase (Soils) of the Vadose Zone
2 Sorbed-Phase (Soils) of the Saturated Zone
3 Dissolved-Phase (Groundwater) Concentrations
4 Soil Vapors
The estimated distributions of hydrocarbons within each phase are provided in the System Design
. Calculations in Appendix H The total mass of contaminants present in the areas of concern, in all
four phases 1s estimated to be approximately 20,241 pounds
IV-1
