Following the initial months of operation with the ICE unit, granular-activated carbon (GAC) vessels
will be delivered to the site and utilized for the treatment of vapor emissions from the SVE
equipment Two 1,000-1b GAC vessels will be mounted in series The second unit will provide
back-up in case of breakthrough on the initial vessel Upon breakthrough, the second vessel shall
become the first vessel and a new GAC vessel will be delivered to the site to act as the second vessel
Carbon change-outs will be accomplished at the site on an as-needed basis
The location of the equipment is indicated on Figures 9 and 10 General details of the mayor pieces
of system equipment are presented on Figure 13, the remediation system process flow diagram
(PFD) Specific details of the mayor system equipment and associated components are presented on
Figure 14, the remediation system piping and instrumentation diagram (P&ID) A legend for the
P&ID symbols and codes is presented on Figure 15 Information on the planned remediation
equipment is presented in Appendix I
D. SYSTEM CONTROLS AND INTERLOCKS/ALARMS
An integrated control panel (NEMA 4 enclosure or such designation suitable for Class I, Division
I1, Group D locations) will be installed to maintain the proper operation of the system and maintain
communications between the various pieces of equipment If the System Interlocks and Alarms
• (SIAs) located 1n the equipment compound are triggered, some or all of the system operations will
be halted and a manual restart will be required for operations to continue There are six (6) SIAs
located in the system that will affect operations and various components The following SIAs are
included in the system
SIA No. I --Air Sparging Solenoid Valve(SV--101)
The primary SAI, which is linked to all the other SAIs, is the solenoid valve located in the air
supply line for the sparging system If any of the other SAIs of the system are tripped, the
solenoid valve will open to atmosphere, bleeding off supply air for the AS system During
normal operations, specifically-timed cycles will be utilized to alternate flow between the
North and South Sections of the AS System
SIA No. 2—AS Compressor High-Temperature Switch (TSH-101)
The air stream from the compressor will need to be below 150° F to avoid damage to the
equipment of the AS Control Manifold To this end, the aftercooler (AC-101) will provide
cooling of the C-101 airstream However, if the exhaust temperature from AC-101 exceeds
the set point, this interlock(designated as SAI No 2 on the PFD)will ensure that the solenoid
• valve (SV-101) is closed and C-101 is shutdown If this interlock is triggered, air flow will
cease and the system will require a manually reset Upon reset the cause for the temperature
excess will be investigated
V-4
