hTJ KLEINFELDER <br /> 4 ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED <br /> Kleinfelder observed debris removal from Sites B and C located on the southeastern portion of <br /> the former Spreckels Plant, also known as the former Grover Area (see Plate 3). Approximately <br /> 5,000 yards of soil and debris was excavated frons Site B and 10,000 yards from Site C. <br /> Groundwater was encountered at both sites at depths of G to 9 feet below ground surface (bgs). <br /> During excavation activities two �11roundwater and one soil sample were collected from Site B <br /> and six soil samples were collected From Site C. A total of' two groundwater and three soil <br /> samples were analyzed for selected analytes. <br /> After excavation of the debris areas. an attempt was made to destroy six monitoring well in the <br /> vicinity of the disposal areas. Three of the monitoring wells were destroyed and three were not <br /> able to be located due to construction activities. <br /> 4.1 EXCAVATION OF 1WBRIS <br /> On .lune 1 i to June 18- 19911 Disposal Sites B and C were excavated by DSS Company Inc <br /> (DSS). Mr. Joe Zilles. a I`leinielcler geologist observed the excavation activities. Mr. Robert <br /> McCollum of the Solid Waste Section of the PHS/EHD was the onsite inspector. For locations <br /> of the disposal areas refer to Platc 3. <br /> 4.1.1 Excavation ot'Disposal Site 13f <br /> Site B was an eloll<<ated oval-shaped excavation approximately 270 feet long and 50 feet wide by <br /> an average of 12 feet deep. 1-he maximum depth of the excavation in relatively small areas was <br /> 20 feet bgs. Approximately 5.000 cubic yards of soil/debris was removed. Debris included <br /> plastic sheeting, Avood. wire. concrete and wood. Mr. Rod Getty, supervisor from DSS estimated <br /> that debris at this location was approximately 1 percent by volume. Concrete was estimated to <br /> be about 70 percent of the debris material. A strip of slaked time was observed near the <br /> southeastern portion of the excavation measuring 150 feet long and 15 feet wide. The slaked <br /> Mille was encountered at deliths ranging from 8 to 10 feet bgs. Mr. Getty estimated that <br /> approximately 25 I)ercent by \'olt1me was slaked lime or lime material. <br /> Soils enc:ountercd included silt ,trul clayey silt with slaked lime material. A small area of <br /> apparently discolored dart: gray material was noted just above the slaked lime with a strong <br /> organic odor.
