4 Stockton Unified School District
t Geological and Environmental Hazards Assessment
' CSU-Stanisiaus,Stockton Campus School Site
tPage 15
r• Sanborn maps, dating from 1895, 1917, and 1950 were reviewed. The 1895 map indicates the site as
Grounds of the Slate Insane Asylum with two Male Wards buildings located north of;flora Street and one
Male Wards building on the west side of Grant Street. Five smaller buildings are-unlabeled- and one
t labeled building, located along the site's eastern boundary, is partially legible. The 1917 map indicates the
site as California State Hospital and shows four of the smaller buildings have been removed and the two
Male Wards buildings north of Flora Street have been;altered. Four streets have been indicated.on the
1917 map. The 1950 map could not be downloaded due to technical difficulties on the website. A Station
l 9 Fire Department was indicated on the southwestern corner of the site and a domicile was indicated
across the street and to the east of the fire station. Sanborn Map information was acquired from an on-line
source and is presented in Appendix F.
4.5 HISTORICAL USE INFORMATION FOR ADJOINING PROPERTIES
Historical use information for the adjoining properties was researched using aerial photographs, historical
USGS topographic maps, and the Polk City Directories at the Stockton Public Library located in
Stockton, California and Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps available for the adjoining properties from.an on-
'line source.
In the 1938 photograph, a farm complex with an orchard and what appear to be equipment storage areas
are located
adjacent to the site's eastern border and infringes within the site's eastern limits. A railroad
spur appears to connect this eastern adjacent property to the railroad tracks that parallel the property's
eastern boundary. A commercial complex appears to be located across and southeast from the paved and
tree-€ined east-west road that is the site's southern boundary. A vacant lot with',trails and several
' buildings, and some possibly residential complexes, appear to be located directly south of the site. To the
west of the site, there appear to be residences with a common driveway and a large, treed acreage area. A
large complex of several buildings surrounded by open, treed acreage appears to be located north"of the
site, and a road appears to separate the site from this property. The 1952 aerial photograph shows that the
railroad spur, the farm complex, and most of the orchard on the adjacent eastern property have been
removed, although a few rows of trees remain along the site's southeastern border. The majority,of the
orchard appears to have been replaced by several long structures with an internal parking area sand a
vacant area to the south. The adjacent property located south of the site's southern boundary road appears
to have been filled in by an additional building and parking area to the"southeast and additional housing to
the west. The road along the western border of the property has been altered; the southwestern portion of
the road has been improved and developed with new structures outside the site boundary, after which the
road then gently curves to the northwest away from the site. The large complex of buildings located to the
north appears to have been expanded.
There are no apparent changes in the 1963 and 1973 aerial photographs. The 1983 photograph was.taken
at a lower altitude in comparison with the 1975 photograph, thus showing greater detail and more easily
observed changes. Three buildings appear to have been added to the eastern adjacent property. The
property across the road and to the southwest has been changed to support a block hof interconnecting
buildings with two defined parking areas; one parking area is located in the southwestern corner of the
block, and one in the northwestern corner of the block. A large building and associated parking lot
appears to have been added to the land adjoining the southwestern site quadrant, north of the paved road.
No other changes are apparent.
USGS topographic maps from 1952, 1968, 1976, and 1987 were reviewed forthe adjacent properties. The
1952 map indicates no structures to the south of the site; these properties are shown as developed. Three
structures are located on the adjacent southwestern corner. Three structures are located on the northern
` R
i CONDOR
