Soil borings were completed to ten feet in the three indicated
locations (Figure 5 ) . Borings were made using hand auger
equipment. Boring logs are presented in the appendix. Soil
samples were taken using brass sleeves fitted in a 2 inch diameter,
6 inch long, core sampler . The core sampler was advanced into
undisturbed soil with a slide hammer.
Soil samples were taken at 2 feet, 7 feet and 10 feet below the
washpad surface. Samples were sealed with foil lined end caps,
chilled and transported to the analytical laboratory under chain of
custody. Chain of custody forms are included in the appendix.
3. 1 .2 Secondary Clarifier
The upstream (west) separation chamber is most heavily affected
when overloading occurs . As contaminated water overflows chamber
one, less is discharged to chamber 2 and if chamber 2 overflows
even less reaches chamber 3 . Compounding the importance of chamber
one as a contaminant source, the maaority of separated contaminants
are impounded in this chamber. As a consequence, two boring
locations were sited next to chamber one. A third was sited near
the discharge outlet (adjacent to chamber 3 ) to detect any
contamination which may have floated out of the clarifier and
settled at this end of the unit. Figure 5 illustrates the boring
locations.
Soil borings were completed to ten feet at each location_ Borings
were made using hand auger equipment. Boring logs are presented in
the appendix. Soil samples were taken using brass sleeves fitted
in a 2 inch diameter, 6 inch long, core sampler. The core sampler
was advanced into undisturbed soil with a slide hammer.
Soil samples were taken at 2 feet, 5 feet and 10 feet below grade.
Samples were sealed with foil lined end caps, chilled and
transported to the analytical laboratory under chain of custody.
Chain of custody forms are included in the appendix.
3 . 1 .3 Discharge Pit Area
During high flow conditions runoff contaminant concentrations
reaching this point are highly diluted. During normal flow
conditions the wetted area in the pit is quite small, less than 4
feet in diameter. Consequently, 2 sample locations were sited, one
adjacent to the outfall and one adjacent to the discharge pipe.
Both are within the radius of wetted area under normal flow
conditions . Proposed sampling locations at the downstream
discharge pit are indicated on Figure 5 .
12
