07 May 2009
AGE-NC Project No. 09-1688
In response to the suspected presence of contamination,AGE collected two shallow subsurface soil
samples from the area in April 2009 by uncovering the area of the former outfall pipe by hand and
packing soil into stainless steel sleeves. Samples S-1 and S-2 were collected on the property of the
site, immediately north of the drainage ditch in the area of suspected discharge. Samples were
submitted to a laboratory and analyzed for total recoverable petroleum hydrocarbons (TRPH), in
accordance with EPA Method 418.1,and total petroleum hydrocarbons(carbon-chain analysis)using
the LUFT method. TRPH were reported in samples S-1 and S-2 at concentrations of 75 milligrams
per kilogram (mg/kg) and 590 mg/kg, respectively. Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as
motor oil (TPH-mo)were reported in samples S-1 and S-2 at concentrations of 72 mg/kg and 310
mg/kg, respectively.
SCOPE OF WORK
AGE will advance three soil borings at the site—immediately north west, immediately southwest,
and immediately southeast of the discharge area —to investigate the potential for significant impact
related to the possible spill or dumping of oil and oil-related constituents from the discharge pipe
area. The proposed probe boring locations are illustrated on Figure 2; however probe boring
locations may be modified due to field observations and conditions and/or additional probe borings
maybe advanced based on findings and field observations.
Probe borings will be advanced using a van-mounted Geoprobe 5400 direct-push probing unit
equipped with 1.25-inch probing rods. The Geoprobe advances soil probe borings using a hydraulic
hammer to drive soil sampling tools to specified depths. Continuous soil samples will be collected
from each boring beginning at a depth of 2.5 feet bsg and extending the total depths of the borings
(10 feet below surface grade). Continuous soil samples will be collected utilizing a macro-core
sampling assembly loaded with 4-foot acetate liners.
After visual evaluation, selected soil samples will be cut from the acetate liners while retaining the
plastic covering of the soil sample. Collected soil samples will be preserved by covering both ends
of the cut plastic liner with Teflon sheets, capping and sealing with tape. Each preserved sample
sleeve will be labeled with soil boring location, depth, time, date and sampler's initials then stored
in a chilled container under ice. Selected soil samples will be analyzed by a California Department
of Public Health-certified laboratory for TPH-mo utilizing the LUFT method(EPA 8015m).
Soil samples will be field-screened for the presence of long-chain hydrocarbons using a flame-
ionization detector(FID). Laboratory reports for soil analyses, testing methods, laboratory quality
assurance/quality control (QA/QC) reports, and sample chain of custody documentation will be
presented in a report with findings and recommendations.
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
