UNION ICE COMPANY
425 N. Union Street, Stockton, California
Final Remediction Ilan
I.0 snE IHSTORY
In August 1989, it was discovered that 4 underground tanks were located at the Union
Ice Facility at 425 N. Union Street, in Stockton, California(see Plate 1). Tank#1 and
Tank#2 were 10,000 gallon fuel tanks that had been filled with water by Union Ice
sometime in the past. Tank#3 was a 500 gallon tank that contained both gasoline and
fuel oil or diesel fuel in the past, and Tank#4 was a 250 gallon tank that contained
waste oil. In September of 1989, these tanks were removed by "Semco" under permit
and under the direction of the San Joaquin Environmental Health Department.
All tanks were disposed of according to law(see permits). Soil samples were taken
beneath all 4 tanks(results are in Figures). It was determined that Tanks#1 and#2
had not leaked. Tank#4, however, has Ieaked at some time in the past, or had been
overfilled. A soil sample was taken approximately 5 feet below the bottom of Tank#4,
and lab results show "none detected." Tank#3 had leaked, and in November of 1989,
a proposal to excavate the contaminated soil from Tank#3 was submitted to the San
Joaquin County Health Department. This proposal was accepted, and on January 18,
1990, the excavation was begun. The excavation was completed on January 24, 1990.
Approximately 550 yards of soil was excavated, and stockpiled on site.
2.0 ANALYTICAL RESULTS
Soil samples, taken at the direction of the San Joaquin County Environmental Health
Department, indicate that only Iow levels of soils contamination still exist on site. No
gasoline was detected in the soils in the floor of the excavation, or in the walls of the
excavation. Oil and grease was detected in the south end of the floor and in the north
wall of the excavation. We also found ethylbenzene at 57,ug/kg in the south floor
sample(see sample results and a diagram of the soil sample location in Plate 2).
On March 2, 1990, Tanks#1 and#2 were re-sampled, at the request of the San Joaquin
County Health Department, by using a drill rig. Original "none detected" results were
- - ----
--------...-----_......__..__..---------- ----------verified.by those analysis (see Plates-2-&-3).-
-- -----
