IDENTIFYING HAZARDOUS WASTE
Some merchandise may NOT go in the trash/dumpster or be disposed of down sinks, toilets or down
any drains. The disposal of damaged items must follow a basic three part process outlined below
to determine if it is eligible to be placed in a hazardous material tote. Management must process
damaged merchandise DAILY. This Hazardous Waste Management Program must be used to
evaluate anything you need to dispose at the store.
#1 - Is It Waste?
Waste is defined as - "An item that can no longer be used for its intended purpose."
Three examples of waste include:
• Items that have been marked down to zero to be disposed at the store level and cannot be sold due
to leaking condition, etc.
• Items that can no longer be used such as an empty aerosol can or an aerosol can with a
missing nozzle.
• Items that are "waste like", such as spill cleanup materials or items that are unsafe to dispose of in
the trash.
Does the item demonstrate any of the following?
Use the examples below to determine if an item qualifies as "waste".
1Wosy` D1WN
wo
About to Leak Partially Full
M _ami: 'IultiVites ,
;off 2.
.`ow
11-I-.y.
Empty Aerosol Can Missing Nozzle LMEW
BIG LOTS!
