IDENTIFYING HAZARDOUS WASTE 0
#2 - Is It Hazardous?
There are many items that can be found throughout our store that, if waste, may be considered
hazardous waste due to the ingredients they contain. Hazardous merchandise will fall under one of
six categories.
The six categories of hazardous waste are:
• Flammable (Aerosols/liquid/combustible)
• Oxidizers
• Corrosive Bases
• Corrosive Acids
• Toxics (including expired/outdated over-the-counter medicines)
• Universal Waste (batteries, small electronics, fluorescent lamps)
NOTE: If an item does not fall into any of the six categories and is not considered hazardous, it must
be marked down or marked out of stock, recycled or disposed of per Big Lots policy/procedure OR
sold if usable for its intended purpose.
#3 - Can It Be Marked Down And Sold?
All categories of Hazardous and Universal merchandise may be sold as long as they still have value,
i.e. are not empty or leaking. If you have items that are partially full, missing a cap or lid (as long as
the contents are not exposed, i.e. "sealed") you may sell them for their intended purpose.
These items are to be marked down to 5¢, hard ticketed using their existing SKU, and prominently
merchandised at the front of the store. They can be signed as a "Manager's Special" or "Just
Reduced", etc.
NOTE: As stated previously, if the container contains a liquid chemical that is leaking or missing a
lid, not sealed, etc. it is to be handled as hazardous and moved to the Hazardous Waste Collection
Center.
Examples of items/situations that can be sold at the front of the store:
•A pack of batteries is missing one or more batteries. Ticket the item at 5¢ (using the correct
SKU number) and sell.
•A dispenser of hand sanitizer has some of the product missing, but still is usable (and not
leaking). Ticket item for 5¢, as stated before, and sell.
•A can of spray oven cleaner is missing the cap, the nozzle and can contents are still there, it is not
leaking and can still be used for its intended purpose. Place the item in a plastic bag and ticket for
5¢ and sell.
Categories of Hazardous Waste
On the following pages we will provide you with examples of each type of hazardous waste, key
points and common items found in each category. These items will have keywords on the label that
help you determine whether or not they may be hazardous.
NOTE: If you are unsure if an item is hazardous or not, caution on the side of error and always
assume it IS hazardous. In EVERY situation, the MOD is to be contacted and he/she will evaluate.
MOW Hazardous Waste Management Program
Revised 3/21/16
