Hazardous Material: Safely Managing Helium
Helium is a colorless, odorless compressed gas that we use to fill balloons. Posted on either the
tank or above the tank are instructions for securing and moving tanks, and filling balloons. You
must follow these instructions, and those listed below, at all times.
• Associates must be properly trained before handling helium.
• Be sure to review the Safety Data Sheet for helium. (It should be posted at the balloon
station and helium storage area.)
• Never leave a tank unattended and accessible, as they can be dangerous and cause serious
injuries to Associates and customers.
• Do not allow anyone to inhale helium from the filling equipment or from balloons.
o Suffocation can take place by reducing the concentration of oxygen in the air.
o Inhaling directly from the filling equipment can also cause serious lung damage.
• Whether empty or full, tanks must be secured at all times. They must be secure in the
balloon station and chained while in the back room.
• Never block tanks in the back room with u-boats, fixtures, freight or other items—
they must be accessible to your team, first responders, and the regulatory agencies.
For more information on safely managing helium, please see the Store Safety Manual.
CA HAZARDOUS WASTE GUIDE SEPT 2019 PG. 12
