FARR ASSOCIATES
- F
1.0 INTRODUCTION u .
Ai
Fi This P
report resents the results of soil gas and soil sampling investigation that took place in
September 1996, as outlined in the work plan submitted on June 25, 1996 by ICF Kaiser. The
work plan outlined procedures to further investigate the lateral and vertical extent of petroleum
a
hydrocarbon affected soil and soil gas at the former Union Ice facility located at 425 North
Union Street in Stockton, California. The additional investigation work was proposed to move
the site toward closure. In addition, this report presents results from groundwater monitoring
events in August 1996 and March 1997.
Ongoing groundwater monitoring at the site indicates that traces of TPH-gasoline, TPH-deisel,
and benzene exist in shallow groundwater at concentrations above drinking water maximum
contamination limits (MCLS). The work plan was prepared in response to a request from San
Fit Joaquin County Public Health Services Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD) in a letter
dated November 22, 1995, to identify the source of the TPH-g contamination.- A work plan
proposing a soil gas investigation was submitted 11 January 1996 (ICF Kaiser, 1996).
i PHS/EHD responded in a letter dated 10 April.1996, and requested that a limited number of
i
` soil samples be collected to verify the soil gas results at selected locations. The revised work
plan included proposed soil sampling along with the soil gas investigation. In September
1996, the soil gas and soil sampling investigation was conducted.
Fl
2.0 BACKGROUND
Fo.,
The former Union Ice facility is located at 425 North Union Street, Stockton, California. The
FE site is situated north of Lindsey Street, east of the Union Pacific Rail Lines, south of a vacant
lot, and west of Union Street (Figure 1). Union Ice owned and operated an ice manufacturing
plant on the site for over 100 years. In 1989, Arctic Ice purchased the facility from Union
Ice.
R4182OA-625460-1 1
nni0 nine/soi lgas3.w pd
