`j FARR ASSOCIATES
Four single-wall steel underground storage tanks, designated Tanks #1 through #4, were
located on the site (Figure 2). Tanks #1 and #2 were 10,000-gallon fuel tanks that reportedly
F11 contained gasoline (PHS/EHD, 1995). Tank #3 was a 500-gallon tank, which contained both
fuel oil and gasoline prior to its reported decommissioning in late 1940's (WHF, 1990).
Tank #4 was a 250-gallon waste oil tank for used motor and compressor oils (WHF, 1990). In
September of 1989, all of the tanks and associated piping were removed from the site by
i SEMCO under permit and direction of the San Joaquin County Environmental Health
Division.
Analyses of the sample collected beneath the northern portion of the product line of Tanks #1
and #2 detected 78 mg/kg diesel. Soil samples collected from beneath Tanks #1 and #2 were
L. non-detect. The soil beneath Tanks #1 and #2 and its product lines were'resampled in March
1990 in response to a request from San Joaquin County:Health Department. Total petroleum
+ hydrocarbons in the gasoline range (TPH-g), TPH in.the diesel range (TPH-d),'and the
aromatics benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) were not detected. The depth
from which these samples were collected appears to be approximately 14 feet bgs (PHS/EHD, '
j 1995).
f Y
f - f
In January of 1990, an estimated°500 to 600 cubic yards of petroleum-affected soil were
excavated from the former Tank #3 area by WHF Environmental Consultants (WHF). The
r
excavated soils were transported to the Union Ice facility located at 1320 West Weber Street,
Stockton and bioremediated. Confirmation samples collected.from the floor at a depth of =
approximately 25 feet below ground surface (bgs) and side walls of the Tank #3 excavation
indicated residual contamination of TPH as motor oil (TPH-o) at,up to 285 mg/kg and
ethylbenzene at 57 ,ug/kg (WHF, 1990). Soil samples collected during the installation of
monitoring well MW-1, located approximately 30.feet northwest of the Tank #3 location,
indicated toluene in the soils from 30 feet bgs down to the water table (55 feet bgs) at
. concentrations ranging from 16 to 130,ug/kg (WHF, 1993).
R4182OA-525950-2
unionice./soilgas3.wpd 2
