The following information was obtained during my review of the
Regional Board casefile, and the SJCEHD casefile for the 748 S Union Street site.
Background:
On 29 July 1986, one 1000 gallon, steel, diesel fuel tank was removed from the site. Confirmation soil
samples were collected from the north and south ends of the tank excavation. The northern sample was
collected approximately 3 feet below the product piping. TPH as diesel, toluene and xylenes were
detected in the soil samples at the following concentrations:
Sample Location: Contaminant: Concentration:
South: Benzene ND
Toluene ND
Xylene 631 µg/Kg
FID-Diesel 95 mg/Kg
North: Benzene ND
Toluene 18 µg/Kg
Xylene 55 E.1g/Kg
FID-Diesel 35 mg/Kg
At the request of SJCEHD, additional site characterization activities were completed on 22 July 1997, by
Dames &Moore. Only one of the six soil borings by the Geoprobe, was advanced to the desired depth.
Soil boring DM-1 was advanced to 25.5 feet below ground surface (bgs). Three soil samples were
collected and analyzed from this boring.
California Environmental Protection Agency
,j Recycled Paper
