' Z1 INC
Tank 1 was found to contain a number of holes and tears on the bottom and sides The tank
' was empty of product at the time of removal A former fuel dispenser stand was located
immediately adjacent to the tank but the dispenser had been removed at an earlier time
' The soil immediately under Tank 1 was found to contain significant concentrations of what
appeared to be "aged" gasoline contamination The hydrocarbon contamination in the soil
' was identified in the field by characteristic odor, staining, and dark colored fuel contained
within the latticework of the soil Limited exploratory trenching was conducted immediately
' under Tank 1 to a depth of 14 feet below ground surface in an attempt to confirm if an
unauthorized release had occurred No soil samples were collected as it was determined
' in the field that a followup investigation would be required
' Tank 2 was removed from the subsurface and found to not contain any significant holes or
tears in the sides or bottom The soil immediately under the tank was noticed to have a
' slight discoloration and odor of fuel oil The discolored soil and odor was found to be
present only immediately under the tank to a distance of not more than 12 inches beneath
the base of the tank A limited exploratory trenching effort to a depth of 5 feet below Tank
2 indicated that no significant soil hydrocarbon contamination was present beneath this
' tank
I
Because the gasoline contaminated soil found under Tank 1 was clearly contaminated, an
' unauthorized hydrocarbon release report (UAR) was filed with the San Joaquin County
Public Health Services Environmental Health Division (PHSEHD) by the owners of Hi Hopes
immediately after the tank removal The owners of Hi Hopes provided PHSEHD with a
' preliminaryinvestigation workplan for exploratory soil boring to determine if significant
9 P P rY 9 9
' hydrocarbon contamination was present at the property WZI provided oversight of the
initial soil boring effort
1 '
1
' 08220010 005 2
