The addendum
provides technical information to supplement the 30 July 2004 Report of Waste Discharge (RWD) and
13 August 2004 Report of Water Reclamation(RWR), dated 24 January 2005, submitted by Musco
Family Olive Company(Musco or Discharger). This information was requested in the 17 September
2004 Regional Board letter commenting on the initial RWD submittal. Where appropriate, comments
specify information requested by this letter that the addendum did not provide.
Improvements to Effluent Quality
Salinity Source Reduction Measures
The 31 March 2003 Salinity Source Reduction Report and the 8 September.2003 Facilities Improvement
Report describe measures Musco proposes to implement to reduce the concentration of inorganic
constituents in its process wastewater. The addendum states that Musco installed a pH and electrical
conductivity(EC)probe in the newer processing area's collection system sump and an EC probe in the
chemical storage yard drain to characterize collected wastewater for determination of whether it should be
diverted to the Class II surface impoundments. Musco is currently directing all flow from the cannery area's
sump to the Class II surface impoundments and is conducting a study to determine the feasibility of making
this arrangement permanent. If the Class II surface impoundments lack the capacity to retain all of the flows
from this sump, Musco will install a timer and EC controller on the sump's pump to automatically divert
high inorganic dissolved solids (IDS) wastewater to the Class II surface impoundments. The cannery area
now has high pressure/low volume hoses for rinsing operations, a 130-foot barrier on the floor to isolate
higher IDS wastewater, and an extended overflow discharge piping from the brine makeup tank to prevent
accidental discharge of overflow to the land application system sump.
California Environmental Protection Agency
oo Recycled Paper
