27 October 2000
• AGE-NC Project No 95-0143
Page 2af6
' 2 2 COLLECTION OF GROUND WATER SAMPLES
Water samples were collected from each purged well using new, disposable bailers and, upon
' retrieval,were transferred into 40-m1 EPA-approved VOA vials containing 0 5 ml 18%hydrochloric
acid as a sample preservative The samples were labeled and transported under chain-of-custody, in
a chilled container, to McCampbell Analytical, Inc (MAI), a DHS-certified laboratory, and were
analyzed for
' • TPH-g in accordance with EPA Methods 5030/8015m,
0 BTEX in accordance with EPA Method 8020/602, and
' 0 Fuel oxygenates ch-isopropyl ether (DIPS), ethyl tertiary-butyl ether (ETBE), MTBE,
tertiary-amyl methyl ether (TAME) and tertiary butanol (TBA) in accordance with EPA
Method 8260M
• Ethylene dibromide (EDB) and 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA) in accordance with EPA
Method 8260
lie
23 SVE/IAS UNITS OPERATION AND MONITORING
Operation of the SVE and IAS units was initiated on 03 November 1999 The sparging system
operates on a one-hour on/one-hour off cycle The sparging system was shutdown concurrently with
the SVE unit(see below) The sparging system down time was part of pulse-mode operation, and not
utility related The air flow rate to each sparging well was maintained at approximately 20 cubic feet
per hour (cfh) during operation The flow rate, burner temperature, exhaust temperature and LEL
were continually recorded on a chart recorder
I The SVE system was operated as a catalytic system with the operational temperature maintained
above 600*F The extraction system had operated continually until June 2000 On 17 June 2000 a
utility failure resulted in a system shut down, the SVE system were non-operational through 29
August 2000 Through an oversight by the gas provider, the SVE unit was not receiving an adequate
volume of gas to maintain operational temperature
Field measurement of flow, vacuum potential and organic vapor concentration in the air stream from
each extraction well were measured on a periodic basis (Table 7) Soil vapor samples were collected
from the input and the discharge of the SVE unit on 03 August 2000, 07 September 2000, 26
September 2000 and 28 September 2000 (Table 5) All samples were collected into Tedlar bags and
. transported in a chilled container under chain-of-custody to a DHS-certified laboratory The samples
were transported to MAI and were analyzed for TPH-g, BTEX and MTBE in accordance with EPA
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc
