Division 20, article 13, and the California Code of Regulations title 22, division 4.5. Used
motor oil is defined by the State of California as "any oil that has been refined from crude oil, or
any synthetic oil, that has been used, and,as a result of use or as a consequence of extended storage,
or spillage, has been contaminated with physical or chemical impurities". Used motor oil does not
include, and cannot be mixed with, the following: antifreeze, brake fluid, other automotive
wastes, fuels, and/or solvents. Additional information on the managing of used oil can be found
in Appendix G.
5.1.1 Accumulation and Storage Requirements
All used oil must be stored in appropriate containers and stored no longer than the
maximum accumulation time.
Containers:
All containers used for storage of used oil must be in good condition and maintain
adequate structural support. Trinitas will utilize portable 55-gallon steel drums that
will be in the shop storage area (Figure 5). The steel drums will have lids that are
kept closed at all times, except when waste oil is being added or removed. Monthly
inspections will be performed, to ensure damaged or faulty containers are not in
use.
