Item No. 3
PC : 2-18-88
UP-88-20
Page 2
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
As proposed, the Terra Genesis facility will import soil con-
taminated with petroleum products for treatment in order to
reduce the toxic substances in the soil to acceptable levels. In
essense, the decontamination process will "clean up" the soil so
that it can be utilized for fill material or added to agri-
cultural land.
The cleansing process will entail several steps, with each treat-
ment cycle lasting 2-3 weeks in the summer and 10-14 weeks in the
winter . Upon arrival at the site , the contaminated soil will be
spread on an 8 , 000-square-foot concrete slab to a depth of one to
two feet and fertilized with nitrate and phosphorus (refer to
Concrete Slat Detail ) . The soil will be thoroughly mixed and
wetted. A prepared bacterial additive will be placed on the
soil , then thoroughly mixed and sprinkled with water to maintain
a moist condition. This bioaugmentation process will reduce the
toxic substances in the soil until Federal and State regulatory
standards are met .
During the cleansing cycle , the soil will be kept moist and mixed
on a daily basis to insure that adequate oxygen and moisture
reach the entire mass . Laboratory testing of soil samples will
occur every two weeks to determine treatment progress . Once the
processed soil is clean, it will be hauled by truck to its
intended location as fill or soil material . It is estimated that
approximately 600 cubic yards of soil can be processed for each
treatment cycle .
Terra Genesis anticipates that the contaminated soil will come
from abandoned or leaking fuel and gasoline storage tanks and
from accidential petroleum spills . They expect to provide ser-
vice within San Joaquin County.
The officers of Terra Genesis are Michael Girdner , President ,
Richard Brew, Secretary, Dana Means , Director , and L. A. "Red"
Moldenhauer , Director .
