• <br /> Introduction to Handling Hazardous Materials (HHM) Program SAF 09-65 Handling Hazardous Ma- <br /> Introduction to Handling Hazardous Materials (HHM) Program <br /> Overview Certain products sold in The Home Depot's stores are hazardous materials. <br /> When these products are damaged,spilled or for any other reason cannot be <br /> sold or returned to the vendor,they may become hazardous wastes.Hazardous <br /> wastes are potentially dangerous to human health and the environment and the <br /> law requires that they be managed and disposed of in particular ways.This <br /> HHM Program provides a system for and instruction on how to handle <br /> hazardous materials and hazardous waste. <br /> This program has been designed to comply with or exceed applicable local, <br /> state, and federal regulations for hazardous materials and waste management, <br /> including the Employees' Right to Know (U.S.) and Workplace Hazardous <br /> Materials Information System or WHMIS (Canada) about hazardous materials. <br /> As a part of the program,The Home Depot uses the 3E Company (3E)to assist <br /> with hazardous material and hazardous waste issues and questions.To ensure <br /> that your location is properly managing hazardous material as required by the <br /> Company and by local,state,and federal regulations,it is imperative that <br /> associates consult 3E at 1-800-451-8346 as detailed throughout this SOP and <br /> otherwise follow the requirements of the HHM Program.3E's telephone <br /> number should be posted on every phone. <br /> HHM Program The HHM Program Binder is a day-to-day reference for hazardous materials <br /> Binder contents and waste management.The HHM Program Binder is divided into the <br /> following major sections: <br /> ■ HHM Program Overview provides instructions on how to use the HHM <br /> Program Binder, key terms used throughout this program,a summary of the <br /> fundamentals of handling hazardous materials and wastes,and a summary of <br /> the assigned roles and responsibilities for executing the HHM Program. <br /> ■ Department Procedures provides detailed procedures for managing specific <br /> kinds of wastes that are routinely generated or stored in the following <br /> departments: <br /> • Gardening Department(D-28) <br /> • Paint Department(D-24) <br /> • Plumbing Department(D-26) <br /> • Tool Rental Center (D-78) <br /> • Receiving Department/central storage area(D-93) <br /> ■ General Procedures explains procedures that are used throughout the store <br /> and not specifically in one department.These include the following: <br /> • Determining whether something is a hazardous waste <br /> • Cleaning up spills <br /> • Labeling hazardous waste buckets and other containers <br /> • Storage of waste containers prior to shipping off site by an authorized waste <br /> transporter <br /> • Shipping waste and hazardous waste manifests <br /> Revised: 12 January 2007 3 <br />
