Definitions of Key Terms SAF 09-65 Handling Hazardous Materials
Definitions of Key Terms
Introduction The following definitions are intended to help you understand the key terms
used throughout this SOP.
Contaminated Rags: Textile materials (shop towels, uniforms, gloves, linens),which have become
soiled with hazardous waste during commercial or industrial use.
Fertilizer: Compounds given to plants for promoting growth. Fertilizers are usually
applied to the soil, for uptake by plant roots, or by foliage spraying, for uptake
through the leaves. Fertilizers can be organic (carbon-based),or inorganic
(containing simple inorganic chemicals).
Hazardous Material: A substance that may pose an unreasonable risk to health, safety, and property
when transported in commerce (as determined by the Secretary of
Transportation or other government agency).
Hazardous Waste: Damaged or spilled hazardous material(solid, liquid,or gas)that cannot be sold
or returned to the vendor. There are four characteristics or hazards that may
make a material a hazardous waste: ignitability, toxicity, corrosivity, and
reactivity (see definitions below).Certain wastes are also listed under federal
and/or state regulations as hazardous wastes meaning that they must always be
managed as hazardous waste. Hazardous waste includes, but is not limited to
the following:
■ Fertilizers (with additives)and pesticides
■ Paints
■ Fuels
■ Solvents
■ Used gasoline/oil
■ Aerosols
Ignitable: One of the four hazardous waste characteristics that are used to describe a waste
that poses a fire or explosion danger. Some examples include paint thinners,
degreasing agents, and gasoline. An ignitable waste is a hazardous waste.
Lamp: A universal waste lamp is the bulb or tube portion of an electric lighting device.
A lamp is specifically designed to produce radiant energy, most often in the
ultraviolet, visible, and infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum.
Material Safety Data A compilation of information required under the OSHA Hazard
Sheet (MSDS): Communication Standard about the identity of hazardous chemicals, health and
physical hazards,exposure limits,and precautions.
6 Revised: 12 January 2007
