Definitions of Key Terms SAF 09-65 Handling Hazardous Materials <br /> Pesticide: Any substance or mixture of substances intended for preventing, destroying, <br /> repelling,or mitigating any pest.The term pesticide applies to insecticides, <br /> herbicides, and fungicides. <br /> Toxic: One of the four hazardous waste characteristics that is used to describe a waste <br /> that poses a health hazard based on the potential dose and response to that dose. <br /> Some examples of toxic waste include pesticides,heavy metals such as lead,and <br /> poisons such as rat poisoning. A toxic waste is a hazardous waste. <br /> Corrosive: One of the four hazardous waste characteristics that is used to describe a waste <br /> that burns the skin or corrodes metal and has a very low pH(such as acids like <br /> muriatic acid) or very high pH(bases such as drain cleaners). A corrosive waste <br /> is a hazardous waste. <br /> Reactive: One of the four hazardous waste characteristics that is used to describe a waste <br /> that is normally unstable and reacts violently with water,such as magnesium or <br /> that contains high levels of sulfides or cyanides.A reactive waste is a hazardous <br /> waste. <br /> Universal Waste: Commonly found wastes for which there are special laws to encourage recycling <br /> and proper disposal when used in the workplace. Universal wastes include <br /> items such as batteries (non-leaking)and mercury containing light bulbs (such <br /> as, fluorescent tubes). <br /> White Goods: Items such as refrigerators,water coolers,wine coolers, and other related <br /> consumer products that contain hazardous fluids that may on occasion become <br /> damaged (and that cannot be marked down and sold) requiring management <br /> through the waste disposal process. <br /> Hazardous Waste Required document that must accompany each shipment of hazardous waste to <br /> Manifest: provide information regarding waste being shipped and to track the shipment <br /> through the disposal process. <br /> Bill of Lading (BOL): Required document that must accompany each shipment of non-hazardous <br /> and/or universal waste to provide information regarding the waste being <br /> shipped and to track the shipment through the disposal process. <br /> Revised: 12 January 2007 7 <br />
