Fundamentals of Handling Hazardous Materials and Waste SAF 09-65 Handling Hazardous Materi-
Regularly generated Departments that regularly generate hazardous waste (Paint,Plumbing,
wastes Garden, and the Tool Rental Center)have specified storage areas to contain
regularly generated wastes. The areas include red metal cans and designated
buckets and/or drums. (See"Department Procedures" on page 1.6).
Storing hazardous We use a color-coded system to store our hazardous and non-hazardous wastes.
wastes Different kinds of wastes(ignitable, toxic, corrosive, reactive,or non-hazardous)
are stored in different colored buckets (yellow, red,or black),stored or
accumulated in specific containers such as a red metal can,and stored in
different areas (or zones) in the central storage area. This system assures that
different kinds of wastes cannot be mixed and inadvertently cause a chemical
reaction. Here are some of the elements relating to storage of hazardous waste.
These and other procedures are described in greater detail in the following
sections.
■ 3E advises the designated HHM associate on which bucket to use and where
to store it in the central storage area.
■ Each bucket must be labeled using a label faxed by 3E or,if a fax is not
available, completed manually as instructed by 3E.
■ Each spill is stored in a separate bucket(one spill per bucket!).
■ Each regularly generated waste stream (used paint rags, paper towels or
sticks with paint,used oily rags,fertilizer sweepings,non-leaking aerosol
cans, waste gas,and waste oil)is stored in a separate bucket or container.
■ The RTV Associate performs daily inspections of the hazardous waste areas
and fixes any issues. In the RTV Associate's absence (such as,weekends or
during vacation periods),the Manager on Duty (MOD) performs the daily
inspections of the hazardous waste areas and corrects any issues.
■ The Store Manager reviews and signs each Daily Hazardous Waste Area
Inspection Form when on duty. In the Store Manager's absence, the MOD
reviews and signs the Daily Hazardous Waste Area Inspection Form at the
time it is completed.
Hazardous waste All hazardous wastes, without exception, must be routinely disposed of by a
disposal licensed hazardous waste transporter and in accordance with local, state, and
federal requirements. This is an overview of some of the requirements relating
to disposal. You must refer to the other sections of this SOP for a more detailed
description of the disposal requirements.
■ The transporter provides pre-printed hazardous waste manifests (or Bills of
Lading for Universal Waste)and transportation of our waste to proper and
permitted disposal facilities.
■ When an additional pick up is necessary, contact your District Asset
Protection Manager (DAPM)for approval. The DAPM will notify 3E to
schedule any additional waste pickups deemed necessary after consulting
store personnel.
Revised: 12 January 2007 9
