It is critical to review each individual procedure in
order to fully and correctly complete critical tasks required of HHM.Specific
procedures can be found in the following sections.
In addition, the HHM training videos for associates and designated HHM
associates will explain and demonstrate the components of the HHM Program.
Handling hazardous At the time of their orientation, associates are provided the booklet The
materials in the Employee's Right To Know About Hazardous Materials (US: HDT-1175) or WHMIS
workplace (Canada:CHDT-2733).This assists associates with recognizing chemical
hazards in the workplace and how to ensure a safe workplace and teaches
associates the cautions, warnings, and labeling systems that warn of a
hazardous material.
Associates must sign the Associate Acknowledgment form at their orientation,
indicating they have received and been trained on the Employee's Right to Know
or WHMIS booklet.
For information about hazardous materials in the workplace, (Material
Safety Data Sheets or MSDSs)you may access information online through
MyApron. If MSDSs are unavailable online, call 3E at 1-800-451-8346.
Information will be mailed or faxed to associates during their work shift.
All associates may call 3E for MSDSs.
Handling hazardous Our stores may generate hazardous waste in two ways:spills of hazardous
wastes materials that may happen throughout the store and daily activities that
generate wastes on a regular basis in specific departments (for example, used
paint rags in the Paint Department). On occasion, materials may be left in a store
parking lot requiring disposal.3E provides support and guidance on the clean
up,classification or naming of the waste, labeling and storage of all hazardous
waste. The following are some of the key elements of managing hazardous
waste but you must also refer to the more detailed procedures in other sections
of this SOP for managing spills and regularly generated wastes.
Spills A store associate initially isolates a spill area to protect associates, customers,
and the environment and calls a designated HHM associate.
In-store designated HHM associates, who receive additional training, are
responsible for managing cleanup and storage of all hazardous wastes in the
store.
A designated HHM associate always calls 3E for cleanup and waste instructions.
8 Revised:12 January 2007
