Paint Department (D-24) SAF 09-65 Handling Hazardous Materials
Paint Department (D-24)
Overview A Paint Department(Department 24) is present in many of The Home Depot's
locations. This department retails and stores various types of paint(such as oil-
based and latex)as well as numerous paint-related products (including some
hazardous materials such as solvents and thinners). A key component of the
Paint Department is the Paint Desk where most of the hazardous materials are
handled (opened,mixed,etc.)prior to purchase.
Waste generated The following wastes may be generated in this department:
■ Waste paint
■ Used rags(paper towels)from paint cleanup
■ Used paint sticks
■ Aerosol cans
■ Empty containers (tint cans)
■ Spilled products, some of which result in hazardous waste
Primary The Paint Department Supervisor and Paint Associates are responsible for
responsibility for proper completion of the HHM tasks outlined below, with the assistance of the
compliance designated HHM associates.
Reducing waste Paint Associates must help reduce the amount of waste generated in the Paint
generation in the Department by taking the following steps:
Paint Department
■ Use a Paint Lid Closer to reseal the can.
■ No rubber mallets should be used in the Paint Department.
■ Be careful when stocking paint to ensure that cans do not fall off the shelves
and become damaged.
■ Stock paint ensuring all palletized paint does not extend into the flue space.
■ If a Paint Associate makes an error while mixing paint, such as using the
wrong color or gloss, use the OOPs program to sell the paint at a reduced rate.
■ Return aerosol cans that contain product but that are not leaking(no residues
exiting the can) to the RTV Associate for handling.
Revised: 12 January 2007 25
