Plumbing Department (D-26) SAF 09-65 Handling Hazardous Materials <br /> Plumbing Department (D-26) <br /> Overview A Plumbing Department(Department 26) is present in many of The Home <br /> Depot's locations.This department retails and stores various types of plumbing <br /> products (some hazardous materials) and provides pipe cutting for customers. <br /> Waste generated The following wastes may be generated in this department: <br /> ■ Used oily rags (cloth and paper). <br /> ■ Oily debris (such as,metal shavings). <br /> ■ Spilled products,some of which result in hazardous waste. <br /> Primary The Plumbing Department Supervisor and Plumbing Associates are responsible <br /> responsibility for for proper completion of the HHM tasks outlined below,with the assistance of <br /> compliance the designated HHM associates. <br /> Oily rags and oily Plumbing Associates must do the following for handling oily rags and oily <br /> debris at the Pipe debris: <br /> Cutting machine <br /> ■ Call a designated HHM associate to set up the red metal can in the Plumbing <br /> Department following 3E's instruction. <br /> ■ The red metal can must be lined and labeled with a waste label and a decal <br /> that reads"Empty Every Night". <br /> ■ Use a paper towel to sweep any metal cuttings (oily debris)from the machine <br /> into the red metal can(place the can directly under the machine). <br /> ■ Use a paper towel(and a hand broom and dustpan if a paper towel alone is <br /> not sufficient)to clean up any metal shavings on the machine or that falls on <br /> the floor area and place them into the red metal can. <br /> ■ Place all used oily rags and oily debris in the red metal can. <br /> ■ Close the red metal can tightly after every use. <br /> Never place used oily rags and/or oily debris in the municipal (general) trash. <br /> No other wastes or materials may be placed in the red metal can. <br /> Emptying the red The red metal can must be emptied at least daily by the RTV Associate or,in <br /> metal can their absence,the MOD. If the red metal can fills up sooner than daily,notify the <br /> RTV Associate or,in their absence,the MOD,who will empty the red metal can <br /> immediately. <br /> Step Action <br /> 1 Remove the liner and its contents (used oily rags and oily debris)from <br /> the red metal can and,whenever possible, tie a knot in the liner. <br /> 2 Take the liner and its contents back to the central storage area. <br /> 3 Locate the yellow waste bucket used for oily rags and oily debris. If a <br /> bucket does not exist for this waste,a designated HHM associate must <br /> call 3E and follow their instructions to set up a proper waste bucket. <br /> Revised: 12 January 2007 31 <br />
