Waste buckets
must not be stacked over 6 feet in height. The purpose of this setup is to
properly separate potentially incompatible materials.
The three zones of the central storage area include:
• Yellow zone:Yellow waste buckets (containing non-hazardous or state-only
regulated wastes)are stored in the yellow zone, located on one side of the red
flammable cabinet.
• Red zone: Red waste buckets (containing toxic or reactive[to include
oxidizers]wastes)are stored in the red zone, located on the same side of the
red flammable cabinet as the yellow zone.
• Red flammable cabinet:Black waste buckets with ignitable waste in them are
stored inside the red flammable cabinet.
• Black zone:The remaining black waste buckets (containing corrosive waste)
are stored in the black zone, which is on the opposite side of the red
flammable cabinet from the red and yellow zones.
When the designated HHM associate calls 3E to classify, contain, label and store
waste,3E will instruct the designated HHM associate on which color bucket to
use and where to properly store(which zone)the bucket or drum of waste.
40 Revised: 12 January 2007
