Procedures for Spills or Unknown Materials SAF 09-65 Handling Hazardous Materials <br /> Procedures for Spills or Unknown Materials <br /> Overview Hazardous waste can be generated from spills of hazardous materials. On <br /> occasion,a material may be left in a parking lot. Associates who discover a spill <br /> or unknown material (a material is found in parking lot)will begin a procedure <br /> to isolate the spill/unknown material. <br /> Spill or unknown If a spill or unknown material is found,an associate and designated HHM <br /> material is found associate must do the following: <br /> Step Action <br /> Associate <br /> 1 Isolate the item from customers and associates with a barrier gate. <br /> 2 Immediately call a designated HHM associate. <br /> Designated HHM Associate <br /> 3 Identify the product from its packaging or identical product on the shelf. <br /> If unable to identify the product,call 3E at 1-800-451-8346 for <br /> instructions. <br /> 4 Determine whether the product can be sold as a markdown (labels and <br /> warnings must be legible) <br /> If... Then... <br /> the product can be sold as a follow the markdown <br /> markdown procedures in Inventory <br /> Management SOI' INV 06-1.0 <br /> the product can not be sold as call 3E at 1-800-451-8346 for <br /> a markdown instructions <br /> Handling a spill When handling a spill, the designated HHM associate must perform the <br /> following: <br /> Step Action <br /> 1 Determine if an evacuation is warranted and order accordingly.An <br /> evacuation is warranted if there is any immediate danger to our <br /> associates or customers (for more information,see Safety/L,I'SOP SAF <br /> 09-05 Emergencies). 3E can provide guidance,as needed. <br /> 2 Provide 3E with detailed product information using the information on <br /> the label of the same product that was spilled,taken from the shelf <br /> (including product name, manufacturer, and UPC) <br /> 3 Write down all of 3E's instructions and instruct the associate to get the: <br /> • Spill Kit <br /> • Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment(PPE) as instructed by 3E <br /> • Appropriate bucket and liner as instructed by 3E <br /> 44 Revised: 12 January 2007 <br />
