General Procedures SAF 09-65 Handling Hazardous Materials
General Procedures
Overview The following sections of the HHM Program provide procedures that apply to
more than one department. For specific procedures that apply to a particular
department, please see the Department Procedures sections.
Procedure for Classifying or Naming a Waste
Overview A critical first step in managing hazardous waste is determining(1)whether the
item is a hazardous waste to begin with, and (2)if so,what kind of hazardous
waste. This process is known as"classifying' a waste. This step is essential
because the classification of a waste determines what kind of container it is
stored in,where it is stored in the central storage area, and the information that
must be displayed on the label of the container. It also affects how the waste will
be transported from the store and ultimately disposed.
The Home Depot has contracted with 3E to classify waste produced in a store.
This includes the following:
■ Waste resulting from a spill
■ Waste generated by a routine activity in a department(such as,waste paint
rags used in the Paint Department or waste fertilizer from the daily sweepings
of fertilizer aisle)
■ Items found in the parking lot of a store
It is critical that the designated HHM associate follows this process exactly and
provides 3E with all necessary information for classifying the item.
Classifying a waste To classify or name a hazardous waste properly, the designated HHM associate
must do the following:
■ Call 3E at 1-800451-8346 for each spill or item found in the parking lot and
the first time a routine waste is generated (such as,when a red metal can is
setup for the collection of used rags).
■ Describe the item to 3E with as much detail as possible, including product
name, manufacturer, the SKU/UPC if it is safe to do so,and a description of
the color, shape and appearance of the product if any of the prior information
is not available.
■ Follow all instructions from 3E on proper clean up,containment, labeling, and
storage of the waste.
The designated HHM associate must call 3E each time a waste is generated from
a spill or item found in the parking lot. 3E will assign a 3E reference number
which is unique to each waste and links to the required information for
classifying the waste, safely storing the waste, completing the waste label, and
waste shipping paperwork.
Revised: 12 January 2007 43
