Procedures for Managing Universal Wastes SAF 09-65 Handling Hazardous Materials <br /> Non-leaking, non- To handle a non-leaking,non-rechargeable household battery, an associate <br /> automotive battery must: <br /> ■ Take the battery to the RTV Department. <br /> ■ Place the non-leaking battery in the black tub designated for batteries,kept in <br /> RTV,to be picked up by authorized battery vendor. <br /> ■ If the battery is not labeled,STOP and call a designated HHM associate.The <br /> designated HHM associate will call 3E and follow 3E's instructions to <br /> complete the label (see Labeling Universal Wastes section below). <br /> IMPOTRTANT: Do NOT store leaking batteries in the red flammable cabinet or <br /> in the satellite storage areas. Call 3E for proper storage and handling. <br /> Steps for handling Each store has a rechargeable battery recycling merchandiser to be used only for <br /> rechargeable rechargeable batteries (such as for use with power tools,flashlights and laptop <br /> batteries computers) and cellular telephones. It is typically located in the Hardware <br /> Department(D-25)or on the Front End. The merchandiser should be equipped <br /> with two or more cardboard recycling containers and plastic bags. <br /> ■ Do NOT store rechargeable batteries in the flammable cabinets. <br /> ■ To recycle a battery,a customer will place the battery in one of the plastic bags <br /> located on the merchandiser and drop it into the container. <br /> ■ When the cardboard recycling container is full,the Hardware Department(D- <br /> 25)Supervisor should send it for recycling using the affixed addressed and <br /> pre-paid shipping label and place the spare container into service. <br /> ■ When a container is shipped for recycling, a replacement container is <br /> automatically sent to the attention of the Hardware Department(D-25) <br /> Supervisor. <br /> ■ If your store does not have a rechargeable battery recycling merchandiser, or <br /> if you need more pre-addressed,pre-paid recycling containers,please contact <br /> RBRC Customer Service at 877-723-1297.To order more cardboard containers, <br /> you will need your site ID,which is located on the cardboard container next to <br /> the UPS label.The full contact name and store position is needed for all <br /> inquiries requiring return phone calls. <br /> Labeling universal Universal wastes have a unique label.A designated HHM associate must <br /> waste containers manually complete the label following 3E's instruction.If present,a designated <br /> HHM associate may complete the informational block on a fluorescent bulbs <br /> box following 3E's instructions.The designated HHM associate must do the <br /> following: <br /> ■ Call 3E and identify the kind of universal waste. <br /> ■ Fill in the following portions of the label at 3E's instruction: <br /> • Contents (use the words"Waste- ") <br /> • Accumulation Start Date <br /> • Shipper("The Home Depot Store# ") <br /> • Store address <br /> Revised: 12 January 2007 49 <br />
