0 <br /> Procedures for Managing Empty Containers SAF 09-65 Handling Hazardous Materials <br /> Procedures for Managing Empty Containers <br /> Overview Empty containers can be generated from any location in the store.These <br /> containers may have held hazardous material and/or hazardous waste and <br /> require special procedures for proper handling and disposal.With the exception <br /> of tint containers and aerosol cans for which the procedures are provided in <br /> "Paint Department(D-24)" on page 25,the procedure for managing empty <br /> containers is provided below. <br /> Ensuring a To ensure that a container(equal to or less than 110 gallons in size)that has held <br /> container is empty a non-gas and non-acute hazardous waste is empty prior to disposal in the <br /> municipal (general)trash,the following steps must be taken: <br /> ■ Call 3E to confirm that the container did not contain an acute hazardous <br /> waste. <br /> ■ Remove all materials from the container that can be removed using the <br /> normal procedure for removing materials. <br /> ■ Manage any removed materials as a waste. <br /> ■ For pourable(such as,liquids) materials,ensure that no material remains in <br /> the container that can be poured or drained out from the container. <br /> ■ For non-pourable(such as, grout)materials, ensure that no material remains <br /> in the container that can be removed by physical means (such as,scraping) <br /> excluding rinsing. <br /> ■ A designated HHM associate must call 3E at 1-800-451-8346 to confirm that <br /> the empty container can be placed in the municipal (general) trash. <br /> For containers that are not empty and still contain material or have held an acute <br /> hazardous material,the container and its contents must be managed as a <br /> hazardous waste.
