M <br />2.0 TRAINING <br />Training on hazardous materials will be provided to employees at the following <br />times; during new hire orientation, annual plant -wide training sessions, before non- <br />routine tasks, and any time a teammate asks for additional training on hazardous <br />materials in their work area. Also, the Safety Team Leader will conduct periodic <br />training sessions in the department when hazardous materials are introduced or <br />changed, a new team member is assigned to the department, or the process is <br />changed <br />The training will be documented to include signatures of those employees attending <br />the training sessions. <br />Training Agenda <br />Employees must be trained prior to initial exposure to any hazardous chemical and <br />whenever a new chemical or a new physical health hazard is introduced into the <br />work environment. Refresher training will be conducted on an annual basis. The <br />training requirements will depend on whether employees handle open or closed <br />containers. The Supervisor will conduct this training. <br />Employees who only handle closed containers of hazardous chemicals, but never <br />use or handle open containers, the training must include: <br />1. The location and availability of the following: <br />• the written Hazardous Chemical Safety Program <br />• the MSDS binder or file <br />• the list of hazardous chemicals at the location and were stored. <br />2. Information on how to read an MSDS. <br />3. An explanation of the HMIS label/warning system. <br />4. They are not authorized to handle any open/opened hazardous chemicals or <br />their containers. <br />Employee who handle open hazardous chemical containers, or use hazardous <br />chemicals, the training must also include the location and availability of the following: <br />5. The written Hazardous Chemical Safety Program <br />6. The MSDS binder or file <br />7. The list of hazardous chemicals at the location <br />8. Information on how to read an MSDS and: <br />• A discussion on applicable chemical hazard categories and their exposure <br />issues (e.g., flammability, carcinogenicity, corrosives, irritants etc.), and <br />• Measures employees can take to protect themselves from hazards (i.e. work <br />practices, PPE, etc.). <br />• What routine operations present an exposure to hazardous chemicals (i.e. <br />maintenance operations, battery maintenance and changing, janitorial <br />operations, etc.). <br />9. Methods and observations that may be used to detect the presence and release <br />of a hazardous chemical in the work area. <br />10. An explanation of the HMIS label/warning system. <br />11. Spill containment and clean up procedures. Only trained personnel are allowed <br />to clean up chemical spills using the provided material for small spills.
