REPRWUCED AT GOVERNMENT EXPENSE,
construction procedure shall be altered, changed or modified to meet the
specified compaction requirements.
3.4.1 Compaction of Trench Refill: In rock, compact to 95 percent of ASTM D
1557, Method D, maximum density. In soft, weak, or wet soils, tamp refill to
consolidate and densify the material. In stable soils, compact to 95 percent
ASTM D 1557, Method D, maximum density.
3.4.2 Backfilling the Tank Cavity: Place backfill in layers not more than
8 -inches thick and within 2 percent of optimum content and compact to at
least 95 percent of maximum density (ASTM D 1557, Method D).
3.5 FINISHING AND SITE CLOSURE: The completed backfill shall conform to the
existing terrain. The finished surface shall be reasonably smooth, compacted,
and free from irregular surface changes. The degree shall be that ordinarily
obtainable from blade -grader operations, except as otherwise specified. The
site finishing work will be undertaken after the regulatory agency has
approved the tank removal and closure work. After completion of finishing
work, the general site will be cleaned of construction debris and a final
inspection will be performed. After successful inspection and receipt of
documentation of the tank and tank cavity inspection from the Government
Consultant, the tank removal project will be considered completed and final.
3.6 ASPHALT AND CONCRETE AREAS: Asphalt and concrete areas shall be
finished as follows: The excavations will be backfilled with remaining
excavated material, if clean, to within 16-18 inches of grade, topped by 12
inches of class 2 aggregate compacted to 90-95 percent density, and finished
with 4-6 inches of asphalt paving or concrete (as shown in Sketch I'Ll').
3.7 LAWNS AND LANDSCAPED AREAS: Where excavations cross lawn areas, sod
shall be replaced following backfilling. Carefully remove sod prior to
excavation. Store and maintain sod until earthwork is completed. Any
damaged sod shall be replaced at the Contractor expense (as shown in Sketch
"Ll').
3.8 FIELD SAMPLING AND TESTING: In addition to provisions set forth
elsewhere in this contract, all sampling and testing shall be conducted by an
approved testing laboratory. Test backfill for conformance to gradation
limits in accordance with ASTM C 136, ASTM D 2419 and ASTM D 2487. Test
backfill materials for moisture density relations in accordance with ASTM D
1557, Method D. Perform at least one of each of the required test for each
material used. Provide additional tests as specified above for each source
change. Perform density tests in randomly selected locations and in
accordance with ASTM D 1556 or ASTM D 2922 and ASTM D 3017 as follows: one
test per 50 linear feet in each lift for trenches (minimum of one test per
lift) and one test in each layer of lift for the tank cavity.
***END OF SECTION***
