REPRODUCED AT GOVERNWNT EXPENSEf 10 . <br />2.1.2.3 Asphaltic Emulsion: Section 94 of the Standard Specifications, Type <br />SS -1. <br />2.1.3 Weed Control: <br />2.1.3.1 Herbicide shall be a dry, free-flowing, dust -free chemical compound <br />which is non-flammable, non-poisonous and non -corrosive. The chemical shall <br />be a chlorate -borate compound, such as polybor-chlorate and 68 percent sodium <br />metaborate, or 73 percent disodium octaborate, suitable for application in <br />powder form or in a solution. <br />PART 3 - EXECUTION <br />3.1 BASE COURSE: Place aggregate base in accordance with requirements of' <br />Section 26 of the Standard Specifications and to the thickness shown. Grade <br />and compact in 6 -inch layers to at least 100 percent of maximum density (ASTM <br />D1557 Method D). <br />3.2 MAINTENANCE: Maintain the base course until the asphaltic pavement is <br />in place. Maintenance shall include drainage, rolling, shaping and water as <br />necessary to maintain the course in proper condition. Maintain sufficient <br />moisture at the surface to prevent a dusty condition by light sprinkling with <br />water. Areas of completed base course that are damaged by freezing shall be <br />conditioned, reshaped and recompacted in accordance with the requirements of <br />this specificaiton without additional cost to the Government. <br />3.3 FINISH SURFACE: The finish surface of base course, when tested for <br />uniformity of slope, shall not deviate at any point more than 3/8 inch from <br />bottom of a 10 -foot straightedge laid in any direction. When base course is <br />constructed in more than one layer, specified smoothness requirements shall <br />apply only to top surface. <br />3.4 WEED CONTROL: One day before the application or placement of bituminous <br />material on the base, the surface shall be sterilized with herbicide. Apply <br />chemical at the rate of 4 pounds per 100 square feet. Apply to the surface <br />dry or as a solution. If applied dry, add water to the surface at a rate of <br />4 gallons per 100 square feet. If applied as solution, dissolve chemical at <br />the rate of one pound per gallon of water and spray on at the rate of 4 <br />gallons of solution per 100 square feet. <br />3.5 PRIME COAT: Prior to the application of the asphaltic concrete, apply a <br />bituminous prime coat of liquid asphalt on the prepared compacted base at the <br />rate of 0.25 gallons per square yard. Apply liquid asphalt by pressure <br />distributors. Allow sufficient time before placing the asphalt concrete to <br />permit the prime coat asphalt to penetrate the prepared compacted base. <br />3.6 ASPHALT CONCRETE: <br />3.6.1 Requirements: The bituminous concrete shall consist of mineral <br />aggregate, uniformly mixed with bituminous material in a central plant in <br />accordance with Section 39 of the Standard Specifications.
