during excavation or material handling operations, a personal injury accident, an explosion or
fire occurring during field operations, a heavy equipment or vehicle accident, or a heat stress
related injury.
Several warning systems may be utilized to notify personnel of an incident, depending on
the work site conditions or the emergency involved. Those systems may include verbal
communications, verbal communications assisted by a bull horn, verbal communications assisted
by a site PA, radio communications, vehicle horns, and portable hand-held compressed gas
horns.
A wind direction indicator (a flag) will be positioned in the exclusion zone. In the event
of an emergency, all personnel will evacuate the site upwind unless the emergency precludes
evacuation in such direction. This measure may require personnel to abandon normal
decontamination procedures. In this event, decontamination should be performed in a safe
location. Refer to Section 3.27 on decontamination procedures in this document. Due to the
small work areas anticipated during this project, creation of evacuation and other signals are not
expected to be necessary. Nevertheless, workers should be cognizant of the reduction of
communication abilities in high noise areas.
onsite:
Below is a list of emergency response facilities and agencies that will be maintained
• General Emergency
• Fire Department
• Police Department
• Local hospital (with address and directions)
• Environmental Protection Agency
• National Spill Response Center
20
