MAR -12-91 T U E
1.6.1 Piping layout
e 0 H I C K M A M - P-01
1 /111 A_
s e o
Advance planning of the piping
layout is essential. It will make ser- 2.
vicing the system easier and can
reduce the quantities of material
required.
1. Using the shortest practical
route, run pipe in a single
trench from the tanks to the 3.
dispensers and from the tanks
to the vent risers.
2. Pipe should run parallel to the
tanks and dispensers.
. Avoid piping across the tanks.
1.6.2- Trenching and backfilling
Proper construction of trenches is
important. They should be wide
and deep enough to accommodate
the piping and backfill material.
See Table 1.6.1 for recommended
minimum burial depths.
1. Typically, all piping should slope
at least Ma inch per foot toward
the tank, Support pipe properly
to prevent traps or sumps.
The piping should be separated
by a distance of at least four
inches (102 mm); the pipe and
trench wall should be separated
by at least six inches 0 52 mm).
See Figure 1.6.3 and Note.
Compact backfill carefully over
and around the piping system
to prevent the vibration of
tamping equipment from driving
small stones into the pipe wall
(See Figure 1,6.1).
WYEAURTM IL11
4. Timing -Cover the pipe as soon
as possible after successful test-
ing to eliminate the chance of
damage to the pipe, floating of
the pipe due to flooding, or
shifting of the line due to cave-
ins. If damage is suspected, the
lines should be retested.
S. Frozen earth will eventually
thaw, leaving the pipe with
insufficient support and voids
around the pipe. Take care to
remove frozen lumps from all
backfill materials before back-
filling (See.Figure 1.6.2).
ill • w
rr- •
Pipe Size
On.) :.(►►mf °
Surface Condition
Minimum
Burial Depth
P
(In.)
