Exposure symptoms are potentially extremely variable.
Symptoms may include nausea, headache, abdominal pain,
twitching, weakness, slurred speech and vomiting. It is
expected that dust control measures, personal protective
equipment and employee work practices will adequately control
potential exposures to the materials present at the site.
4.0 RISK ASSESSMENT SUMMARY
The anticipated risks resulting for the potential hazards
discussed above depend on the control measures implemented.
It is believed that the control procedures established will
reduce the overall.risk to acceptable levels for all worker's
involved. The primary control measures for the main hazards
are indicated below.
Chemical Exposure - The contamination levels at the site are
the result of the residual materials and not high volumes, or
concentrations, which would have been present during
production. Waterspray is expected to prevent dust and
volatile hydrocarbon generation during excavation operations.
Employee work practices and protective clothing are expected
to prevent exposures during excavation/decontamination and
construction activities.
Heat Stress - Employee awareness is the primary control for
this hazard. The risks of this hazard will remain for the
duration of the project. The project length is relatively
short, with the projected time frame of two weeks.
Equipment Operation - Only trained, experienced operators
will be allowed to use the equipment.
Personal protective equipment will be provided for all on
site employees. This protection is based on the potential
chemical and physical hazards and prior experience. The site
Health and Safety Officer will be responsible for determining
the appropriate level of protection and may designate
alternate levels than those described, where site conditions
warrant such action.
Employees involved in excavating and decontamination
activities will wear Level C protection, which consists of
hard hat, full face respirator with combination organic
acid/high efficiency dust cartridges with dust prefilters,
